STIRLING (A GENTLE…’GET BACK TO NORMAL’) WALK…..on pavements and paths

GradeC. Distance: 6 miles: 3 hours Meet/time: VUE CP to leave at 11am. Description: Along the Forth …then crossing the bridge to Cambuskenneth.  Head towards “Wallace Monument” then left to “Causwayhead”….left to “Old Stirling Bridge”….right to “Business Centre, Raploch”….left to lower path behind “Castle” to “Smith Gallery.”   We will then gather at a Stirling eaterie-pub for a meal ….subsidised from SRC funds. Sunday 7th January    

GARGUNNOCK to KIPPEN   (2 WALK OPTIONS)

Grade: C/C+. Distance: 7.5/9.5 miles; 4/5 hours. Meet/time: Leaving at 10am from outside Gargunnock Inn….where we’ll return for refreshments.

Description: Both walks will follow the Old Military Road to Kippen, with its attractive views to northern peaks. The C+ walkers will continue down Rennie’s Loan and take western paths round the outer districts of the village, passing the site of the famous ‘Kippen Vine’ ….that once was a popular destination.

After lunch/coffee in Kippen the C walkers will return to Gargunnock along the same route as they came.

Map Ref:NS 804963.  Description: A lovely walk starting with a stroll round the beautiful Campus of Stirling University and Old Logie Churchyard (3.5 miles) followed by a walk to Mine Wood, Cocksburn Reservoir and Hermitage Wood (4.5miles).  Some climbing involved on the second part of this walk. GLASGOW’S 22 BRIDGES WALK

Grade: C. Distance  6/7miles. 4hrs  Meet/time: 10.20am at Queen St Station then travel by No 18 or 263 bus to start walk at Dalmarnock. Description: This interesting cultural and historical walk takes in some of the most iconic sights in Glasgow, starting at Dalmarnock Bridge and finishing at the Glasgow Science Centre, beside the berth of the PS Waverley. (Shorter option walkers peel off at St Enoch’s Centre) We cross Glasgow’s many bridges over the Clyde including the iconic Clyde Arc, known locally as the Squinty Bridge, with the walk taking in both the north and south sides of the river. Many famous sights to be seen on the way, include Glasgow Green, the armadillo-like shape of the Clyde Auditorium, and the Finnieston Crane. Ascent negligible.

THE GREAT TROSSACHS PATH – Brig O’Turk to Callander

Grade: C+ . Distance: 8 miles; 5 hours. Meet/time: 9am Alloa Town Hall,  9.20am the VUE, 9.30am Bridge of Allan for COACH to Brig O’Turk to start walk. Description A lovely walk passing through ancient woodland, open hills and newly emerging trees on well surfaced paths.  Splendid views over Lochs Achray, Drunkie and Venachar to Ben Venue and surrounding hills. The final section passes through farmland on the old railway line into Callander. Well made off-road paths throughout. Ascent 250 metres.

AUCHTERARDER. “THE LANG TOUN”…AND ITS SURROUNDING COUNTRYSIDE.

Grade C.  7.5 miles. 4 hours. Meet/time: 10am at Crown Wynd CP, Auchterarder. (Travel along High St…A824 until you reach CO-OP on your right,…the next turning right is car park)

Description.  We head down to Burnside then follow the Ruthven Water on wooded outward paths ….south of the town.  Eventually, we cross the golf course on an ancient ‘right of way’ where we meet the Oak Walk with its fairy figures and pool,  arriving at the hamlet of Castleton and then back to town for refreshments.    A walk that shows the current and the past of this attractive town.

CRAMOND VILLAGE AND BEACH PROMENADE

GradeC  Distance 6 miles 4hrs Meet/time: 9.30am at Gateway Grangemouth (to travel in convoy) or the start of the walk at 10.30am at CP beside the Cramond Inn EH4 6NU. (Turn off Whitehouse Road, following a sign for “Cramond Village and Kirk”, down Cramond Glebe Road, and turn right near the bottom of the hill.) Description: A Roman Fort, the Cramond Tower, the Maltings museum (2-5pm) and Bistro, and Cramond Island are all delights awaiting us on arrival at the village. We take a gentle stroll eastward along the Forthside promenade, and refreshments are available at the Broadwalk Beach Club (cossies optional🏖). We then amble up Silverknowes Rd, towards our visit of the Lauriston Castle grounds. The Edinburgh Kyoto Friendship Garden is a pleasant place for lunch. Then it’s back to the beach and off to discover the delights of Cramond Island. Ascent negligible. Tarmac walkways and paths.

Option (+1.5 miles) Walk the Causeway out to Cramond island and back.

PEEBLES to INNERLEITHEN via LEE PEN (COACH)  

Grade: C/ B+. Distance: 7/10miles. 4/6 hours. Meet/time: COACH leaving 8.30am Alloa Town Hall and 9am Gateway, Grangemouth .  Map Ref: 73/NT261403 (start of walk). Description: B+ walk: From Peebles we head up through Glentress Forest on good tracks to gain open moorland where we have some ups and downs over several tops before gaining Lee Pen for some fantastic views over the Tweed Valley. From here a good descent path leads us back down to Innerleithen. Ascent 650m.

C walk: Follows the Tweed Valley Railway Path linking the towns of Peebles and Innerleithen, passing through the village of Cardrona. The path follows the picturesque River Tweed for much of the way.

KINNOULL HILL AND TOWER, PERTH

Grade: C+. Distance  6 miles. 4hrs  Meet/time: 10.30am at South Inch Car Park, Shore Rd, Perth. Map Ref: NO120230. Description: We cross the silvery Tay by the railway bridge and walk through the pretty Branklyn Gardens. We make our way up through the forest to Kinnoull Hill, set on a dramatic clifftop escarpment above the Tay. It makes a grand setting for a cylindrical tower built as a folly. Magnificent views can be seen up the river towards Dundee. The path then makes it’s way into Perth again via Corsiehill, across the Perth Bridge, along the riverside back to the South Inch. Ascent 260m

VISIT: WEST MOSS-SIDE ORGANIC FARM AND CENTRE,Thornhill

Meet: Stirling…..Time & place to be confirmed

Starting with a morning visit to Flanders Moss……including the Viewing Tower and Walkway……then lunch at the Lion and Unicorn, Thornhill.

In the afternoon we will visit and  be shown round the farm by owner,Kate, who was one of the speakers at the Flow Country Lectures at the Smith Gallery.

Kate will walk us over the fields to the bog and experience the Carse clays …..returning to view the Artwork Exhibition which reflects the “natural world.”

As it is ‘Art Beat Week’ there will be  a collection for Strathcarron Hospice ……and a donation of £5 per head has been requested by Kate. Teas and coffee and home baking will be available and Organic Shetland Beef will be on sale

BISHOP HILL CIRCULAR  

Grade: C+ . Distance: 8 miles; 5 hours. Meet/time: Holl Reservoir Car Park 10:30. For those travelling direct turn left(north) off the A911 3 miles east of Scotlandwell – the minor road is unsigned but there is a Scottish Water sign here. To car share and/or travel in convoy meet in Dollar Main St opposite King’s Seat pub at 9.30am. Please email John if you want to meet up. Map Ref: NO 224034.  Description: : An easy ascent to Bishop Hill Summit on farm / forestry / water company tracks opening up lovely views over Loch Leven to the Ochills. From here we turn north along a broad ridge with lovely views of the Lomond Hills. Once on the open hill, the path is rougher and muddy in places before rejoining a track by Harperleas Reservoir for the return to the car park. Ascent 250m

C walk 5.5 miles.  Lunch, at least an A. 😄

A delightful Circular Walk that takes us through Culross onto the Fife Coastal Path, ….then along to Valleyfield to follow the Bluther Burn back to start.

By this time you’ll have an appetite to enjoy Alison’s homely buffet lunch, a cheeky wee 🍷 or two, and enjoy the  garden and Alison’s and Ian’s fine hospitality.  Price £8.  😋
