DOLLAR – POOL of MUCKHART – MUCKHART MILL CIRCULAR

Grade: C+. Distance: 7 miles; 4 hours. Meet/time: 10am. At Dollar Health Centre, (pass Castle Campbell Hotel, over bridge immediately right into Park Place) Map Ref: 58/NS 964978    Description: A pleasant country walk along quiet minor roads, farm tracks and paths …passing many fine views and local landmarks.  Ascent 100m

DOUNE HISTORICAL WALK

Grade: C. Distance:8 miles; 4hours. Meet/time:  10am at Woodside Hotel (park furthest end of CP from hotel entrance). Map Ref: NN725016  Description:. From the town centre to a Pistol Manufacturer, then along the river to Doune Castle, following tracks to Old Kilmadock Cemetery and returning along the river . Ascent: negligible.

Sunday 22nd January

MINE WOOD–COCKSBURN RESERVOIR-WITCHES CRAIG from BRIDGE of ALLAN

Grade: C+. Distance: 7.5 miles; 4.5 hours. Meet/time: Car Park Fountain Road Bridge of Allan at 10am. Map Ref: NS: 792 973.

Description: A lovely local walk through deciduous woodland and open moorland with classic views to the surrounding countryside. The start ascends at a suitably leisurely pace through Mine Wood to a fine viewpoint. From here the way levels out rounding Cocksburn Reservoir and onwards to the rocky outcrop of Witches Craig overlooking the Wallace Monument. Then a descent to historic Logie Kirk before returning through Hermitage Wood to Bridge of Allan.

Highest point is 200 metres above sea level. In places paths are very likely to be muddy and walking poles recommended.

Grade: C+. Distance:7 miles;4. 5hours. Meet/time: At start of walk at 10am opposite Gargunnock Inn. Map Ref: NS705945.  Description : A lovely ‘Anti-aging ‘walk around Gargunnock for a visual delight. Taking in Gargunnock House and Gardens then following forest tracks by the old quarry and view point. Returning by Heathers Wood with small section of free range walking .Possible visit to the ‘Secret Waterfall’. Great views tgroughout.Ascent: 150m.

OCHILS : CRAIGHORN by THE SILVER GLEN

Grade:B . Distance: 8 miles; 5.5 hours. Meet/time: Woodland Car Park, Alva at 10.00am. Map Ref: NS: 900 975. Description:  Circular hill walk to Craighorn summit (583 metres) for excellent views over the Forth Estuary. For much of the way we walk on good paths ascending by Silver Glen and returning by the farm track above Alva Glen. Approaching and leaving the summit there are a couple of miles on trampled moorland with great views to surrounding Ochil Hills.

CALLENDAR CRAGS – BRACKLINN FALLS LOOP

Grade: C+. Distance: 6miles; 4hours. Meet/time: Lower CP on the Bracklinn Road, Callander at 10:30am. Map Ref:. NN 637 083. Description: This circular walk commences with a slow climb through conifer woodlands to the top of Crags above Callander from which impressive views of the town, Loch Venacher and Ben Ledi can be seen. The route continues North on local roads with views up the upper glen of the Keltie Water towards Stuc a’Chroin.  The track turns South through dense forestry, then opens out with views of the wonderful Bracklinn Falls, a set of steep falls in a beautiful wooded gorge. Queen Victoria would certainly have approved of the distinctive new bridge which now spans the Keltie above the falls. Ascent 100m

CONIC HILL, LOCH LOMOND

Grade: B. Distance:8 miles; 5hours. Meet/time: Drymen CP on B858 Stirling Rd at 10:30am Map Ref: NS 475 886  Description: This linear walk starts in Drymen and follows the West Highland Way westwards towards Balmaha. Conic Hill is a sharp summit rising above Balmaha. Right on the Highland Boundary Fault, this hill walk offers truly fantastic views over Loch Lomond and its many islands.The paths consist of forest tracks and well compacted surfaces with steps. The return to Drymen is by McGills bus service 309. Ascent 360m.

AROUND THE BRAIDS, EDINBURGH

Grade: C+. Distance: 7.5 miles; 4 hours. Meet/time: Travel by train to Edinburgh Waverley(dep Stirling 0905 /Falkirk High 0922) to meet 10.10am then catch Lothian Bus 11 in Princes Street at 1023. Start walk around 11.00am. Return from Waverley at 1606. Description: Takes in Braidburn Valley Park, the Hermitage of Braid, Blackford Hill and the Braid Hills. A fairly straightforward walk, though it involves some steepish climbing, compensated by spectacular views of Edinburgh.

LOCH KATRINE SAIL and WALK

Grade: C+. Distance: 12 miles. Meet/time: Meet at Trossachs Pier at 10.15am for 10.30 sailing. Description: We sail on the Sir Walter Scott to Stronachlachar at the top of Loch Katrine then walk back to the Pier. Mostly flat, short inclines and on tarmac with a few diversions to side of road tracks.   Sail price approx £14/16. Those who prefer not to walk can do return sail….after enjoying a refreshment/snack in the Pier Tearoom at Stronachlachar. Names to Elaine, please

A MUNRO:BEN CHONZIE FROM GLEN LEDNOCK

Grade: B+. Distance: 9 miles. 5-6 hours. Meet/time: 9am VUE CP or small parking area at Invergeldie road end, Glen Lednock above Comrie at 10am. Map Ref: 52/NN743274  Description: A chance to climb one of the area’s easier Munros with a straightforward route through pleasant open countryside, all on good tracks to the summit. An ideal Munro to start with if you have not done one before…rewarded with fine views in all directions. Return via ascent track.

CASHEL WOODS and QUEENS VIEW

Grade: C+. Distance: 8 miles; 4.5 hours. Meet/time 10.30am at Balmaha Visitor Centre CP. Map Ref: NS:421909.  Description: Starting on  the West Highland Way on the northern shores of Loch Lomond, we branch up through the Cashel Woods via the  Visitor Centre to the Queens View where we can see and perhaps identify some of the many islands in the Loch and its surrounding hills. On the return look out for the remains of the “Old Shieling”. Well defined paths and tracks. Full ascent optional.

Grade: C+. Distance:5 miles; 3hours. Meet/time: At start of walk at 10.30am Bracklinn Falls Lower CP. Map Ref: NN635083.  Description: Through the woods, by golf club, we pick up old railway tracks to Auchenlaich , Chambered Cairn and hill fort to Bracklinn Falls. We then follow the Keltie Water by forest, returning on quiet road past the Red Well. Ascent: 100m.
